We will see you as soon as possible.
If it cannot
wait, call us.
A dental emergency is any situation that causes you significant pain, distress, or concern that you feel cannot reasonably wait for a routine appointment. This includes severe toothache or dental pain, a broken, chipped, or knocked-out tooth, a lost filling or crown, a dental abscess or facial swelling, a soft tissue injury to the mouth, or any sudden change in your mouth that is worrying you.
If you are unsure whether your situation is an emergency, call us anyway. We would far rather speak to you and offer reassurance than have you waiting in discomfort at home. If we are closed, NHS 111 can offer out-of-hours dental advice and direct you to an urgent dental service. For facial swelling that is spreading, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or any trauma involving the head or jaw, please attend your nearest A&E or call 999.
When something feels wrong, the right thing to do is pick up the phone.

care, even when
it is urgent.
An emergency appointment at Parchment Street Dental is not a rushed triage. We take the time to understand what is happening, treat you properly, and make sure you leave feeling looked after and informed.
Call us first
The first step is always a call. Our team will ask you a few brief questions about what you are experiencing, offer any immediate advice if needed, and find you the earliest possible appointment. In most cases we can advise over the phone whether your situation needs to be seen urgently or whether it can safely wait a little longer.
A proper assessment
When you arrive, your dentist will take the time to examine you thoroughly, understand the cause of the problem, and explain exactly what is happening. We do not simply treat the symptom. We identify the underlying issue so we can give you the right treatment, not just a temporary fix that sends you back in pain a week later.
Treatment on the day
Where possible, we carry out the necessary treatment at the same appointment rather than asking you to come back. Whether that means relieving a painful tooth, repairing a broken restoration, prescribing medication for an infection, or stabilising something that needs further work, we aim to leave you in a better position than when you arrived.
A clear plan going forward
Before you leave, we will explain what caused the problem, what we have done, and what, if anything, needs to happen next. If further treatment is required, we book it before you go. We also take the opportunity to welcome you as a patient at Parchment Street Dental, so that you have a practice you can rely on going forward.
What we can
help you with.
Most dental emergencies fall into one of these categories. Select each one to understand what is involved and what we will do to help.
Dental pain that is persistent, severe, or keeping you awake needs to be assessed as soon as possible. The cause could range from decay and a cracked tooth to an infection or an exposed nerve, and the right treatment depends entirely on identifying what is happening. Over-the-counter pain relief can help manage the discomfort in the short term, but it will not resolve the underlying cause. Call us and we will find you an appointment.
For patients already registered with Parchment Street Dental. Call us and we will find you the earliest available appointment.
Not yet registered with us? We welcome new patients in pain. We will assess and treat you, and welcome you to the practice going forward.
Emergency cover included as standard. Check-ups, hygiene visits, and 10% off treatments all included in your monthly membership.

No. We see emergency patients who are not registered with us. The appointment fee is £80 for new patients rather than £65 for registered patients. If you choose to stay with us after your emergency appointment, we will register you and your details will be on file for any future visits.
If you are in severe pain outside our opening hours, over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen or paracetamol can help manage the discomfort. You can also call NHS 111 for out-of-hours dental advice. For facial swelling that is spreading rapidly, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or any serious trauma, please go to your nearest A&E or call 999. Call us first thing the next working day and we will prioritise you.
In most cases, yes. We aim to carry out the necessary treatment at the same appointment wherever possible, whether that means relieving a painful tooth, repairing a broken restoration, or prescribing antibiotics for an infection. Occasionally a problem requires more extensive treatment that needs to be planned across a second appointment, but we will always leave you in a more comfortable position than when you arrived.
Yes, we see children in emergencies. If a child has knocked out a baby tooth, it is generally not replanted, but we will examine them and advise. If a permanent tooth has been knocked out, time is critical: keep the tooth moist, call us immediately, and we will see you as soon as possible. For any facial injury or swelling, please take your child to A&E if there is any concern about their wellbeing.
We cannot guarantee same-day appointments, but we do our best to see urgent cases as quickly as possible. The sooner you call, the sooner we can find you a slot. If you call early in the morning, there is a much better chance of being seen that day. We will always give you advice over the phone while you wait, and triage your situation honestly so you know whether it needs to be seen urgently.
